Places to Visit in Zermatt

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is one of the best places to visit in Zermatt, Switzerland. At an elevation of 3,883 metres, it is the highest cable car station in Europe. From its observation deck, you can see the Italian and French Alps, including Mont Blanc. The area has a restaurant, a year-round ski area, and a starting point for hikers and climbers. It offers incredible views from the cable car, along with spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea on clear days.

Mountaineer's Cemetery is a touching place to visit in Zermatt. It honours about 50 men and women who lost their lives in the surrounding mountains, including the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. The cemetery includes the graves of famous climbers, like Peter Taugwalder and his son, who survived the first ascent of the Matterhorn. It also has the grave of Michel-Auguste Croz, who was a guide who died during that climb. This cemetery reminds you of the dangers and bravery of mountaineers.

Gorner Gorge is among the most beautiful places to visit in Zermatt for families. Formed by the Gornervispe River cutting through rock over thousands of years, it has a wooden walkway built in the 19th century. This walkway lets you get close to the chilly waters of the river. You can see spectacular waterfalls and ancient rocks over 200 million years old here. Located just a 20-minute walk from the Zermatt train station, it is best visited in September.

The Matterhorn Museum shows the history of Zermatt and its growth over the years. It tells the story of Edward Whymper and his team’s first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, which ended in tragedy. You can see the broken rope that led to the accident. The museum also displays old mountain climbing tools and artefacts that showcase village life from a century ago. Outside the museum, you will find the charming 1906 Marmot Fountain and the life-sized bronze ibex behind it. 

The Igloo Village is one of the unique places to visit in Zermatt, Switzerland. Located at 2,727 metres above sea level, it offers stunning views of the Matterhorn and Valais Alps. Here, you can spend a cosy night in an igloo lined with lambskin, designed by international artists. You can also enjoy activities like snowshoe hikes and relaxing in a hot tub. The guides in Igloo Village serve homemade mulled wine and cheese fondue.

Dating back to 1285, St. Mauritius Church has a rich history. The current church was built in 1913 and has beautiful art and architecture. The church is well-known for its lively community and hosts sung masses with a choir. Inside, you can see the "Noah’s Ark" painting by Paolo Parente. St. Mauritius Church is also a popular spot for weddings. From the entrance of the church, you can see the spectacular views of the Matterhorn.

The Anglican Church of St. Peter- If you are a history buff, you should visit The Anglican Church of St. Peter. It is one of those special places to visit in Zermatt that was made for English visitors in 1870 who were among the first to explore the Matterhorn. The church has memorial plaques for mountaineers who were connected to Zermatt, including those who died during early climbs. Its churchyard has graves of climbers who lost their lives.
